THREE more tall ships have confirmed they will be taking part in an annual maritime festival which starts in the North-East next year.

The Tall Ships Race will be back in the region next summer after previous successful staging of legs on Tyneside and Hartlepool in recent years.

Sunderland hosts the opening leg of the 2018 race, with the flotilla setting off for Esbjerg in Denmark., on July 14.

Organisers have confirmed the latest additions to the “cast list” for the sailing spectacular.

The Eendracht is a Class A ship, Holland’s largest three-masted schooner, James Cook is described as, “a stunning Class C vessel”, from the UK, and Rupel adds to the Class B participants, joining the event from Belgium.

As with other entrants, the ships are built for ocean sailing with inexperienced novices finding their sea legs, supported by experienced crew members.
