YORKSHIRE Day is being marked in traditional style with a market going back over 800 years.

Bedale's town traders are staging a special market on Yorkshire Day, August 1, to promote Brand Bedale, a new support group set up to promote the historic town.

The marketplace is expected to be full to capacity with stalls along with visits from the Fire Service and a local traction engine.

Celebrations are being organised by Bedale Town Council in partnership with Brand Bedale, and supported by Hambleton District Council’s Vibrant Market Towns team.

It's the first event in a programme designed to encourage residents and visitors to support the local economy.

“Yorkshire Day is a very special day for our county,” said Janet Stevens, owner of Red House and one of the founding members of Brand Bedale.

“So where better to celebrate it than in our beautiful market town with a traditional Yorkshire market simply bursting with special treats, goodies and great value goods.

"The response to our call for traders has been phenomenal and the market will be the busiest it’s been in years.”

She said confirmed traders include Mason’s Yorkshire Gin, distilled in Bedale - and specialist traders in computer games, cheeses, home-made bakery products, jams and chutneys, leather goods, jewellery, fresh fruit and veg, breads, homewares and garden goods.

Members of Bedale Tourist Information Centre will be serving Yorkshire teas.

The market is open from 7am until mid afternoon.
