A BEGINNERS’ map and compass course is to be run by voluntary walk leaders David Butler and Ian Schofield, over the weekend of August 5 and 6.
The first day, starting at 9.30am, will be devoted to “theory and practical”, learning the rudiments of map reading with the added assistance of compass use, while the novices’ new-found skills will be put to the test on a six-mile walk, in Weardale, County Durham, on the Sunday.
Among the equipment required will be the Ordnance Survey map OL31 - North Pennines and a silva-type compass, plus packed lunches.
There is a £35 charge per person, covering both days.
Full details of venues and other information will be provided on booking, by email to countryside@durham.gov.uk, or by ringing (03000) 264589.
