THE North of England is £6billion underfunded compared to London, a study has found.
The analysis by IPPR North has shown that he North of England would have seen £59 billion more over the last decade, if it had received the same per person for infrastructure as London – the equivalent of filling in a billion pot holes.
The think tank also found that if the North had received the UK average spending per head each year for the past ten years, it would have received £10 billion more.
Average public spending over the last ten years was £282 per head in the North, compared to a national average of £345 and £680 in London.
Luke Raikes, IPPR North senior research fellow, described it as a “national scandal” and called for a federal UK with devolved funding for regional infrastructure.
