A CANINE crime-fighter is about to put his paws up after almost nine years of active service.

Yellow Labrador Ben is one half of the Durham police dog duo, Jet and Ben, who have helped educate thousands of children across the force area about personal safety, stranger danger and internet awareness.

Yesterday, Ben made his final school visit before retirement to Tudhoe Colliery Primary School, near Spennymoor.

His handler, PCSO Claire Kerr, said: “We got Ben when he was eight months old and he’s now almost nine so he’s been with us for a very long time.

“Along with Jet, he plays an important role in educating children in County Durham and Darlington on personal safety.

“He is the perfect dog – he’s so good with children and is very calm and chilled out.

“We will be very sad to see him go but we wish him well in his retirement. I’m sure he will enjoy chilling out and relaxing with his new family.”

Headteacher Jim Smith said it was an honour to host Ben’s last school visit.

He said: “Both Jet and Ben over the years have been a source of inspiration across County Durham, children really respond well.

“We are mindful of safeguarding issues like the internet, water safety and of course stranger danger remains an important message. I think it helps for children to have people from outside come into school to give them the same messages we do in a memorable way.”

Durham Agency Against Crime (DAAC) hopes to recruit a new puppy, up to a year old and of calm temperament, to replace the outgoing Ben.
