A SERIES of measures have been implemented to combat a spate of vandalism at a cemetery.
Durham County Councillor Sam Zair donated £200 of his neighbourhood budget, which was matched by the council, to get four new planters installed in Bishop Auckland’s Town Cemetery.
In addition, the council has repaired the surrounding fence and removed a bush, which had provided shelter for a homeless man.
Cllr Zair said: “I haven’t heard of any problems for months. Families come up here to reflect and visit loved ones. They need to feel safe.
“The county council has bent over backwards to improve things here.”
He said families who visit regularly have offered to water and replant the new containers.
