YOUNGSTERS enjoyed a railway adventure in their own private engine yesterday.
Junior children at Witton-le-Wear Primary School in County Durham took a trip along Weardale Railway as a special treat for working hard all year.
The 50-strong group had a full carriage to themselves as they journeyed from the village platform to Stanhope Railway Station, where they set off on a nature walk with their teachers.
They then joined children at Stanhope Barrington Primary School for lunch.
Headteacher Mark Stephenson said: “We hope this will be the start of new friendships. When the children get back to school they will get the chance to write letters and emails to their new friends.”
Mr Stephenson said it was important to teach the children about Weardale’s railway heritage, adding: “Lots of people in the village volunteer for Weardale Railway and obviously we have the platform here.
“Travelling by train is an opportunity for children to see the local area from a different perspective than they would if they were walking or in the car.
“We hope it will be a memorable experience for everyone. We always organise something at this time of year to reward the children for all of their hard work.
“Next week, we will take the infants on the same trip.”
