THE man charged with murdering a father appeared in court this morning.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, 34-year-old Michael Lawson was found on Geneva Road, Darlington, with fatal knife wounds.

David Jeet Saunders, of Esk Road, Darlington, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court yesterday charged with his murder.

The 32-year-old spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Magistrates remanded him in custody ahead of an appearance at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday.

The public gallery was full for his appearance, with several people in tears as he was led from the dock. One woman shouted she loved him as others said goodbye.

Another man initially arrested in relation to the death was later released without charge.

Mr Lawson was found by a member of the public who took him to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

He was declared dead at the hospital and a post-mortem report found Mr Lawson died from a single stab wound to the heart.

Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Green of Durham Constabulary, has appealed for a motorist who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

He released CCTV footage of a white saloon car being driven down Geneva Road from the Neasham Road roundabout at the time.

DCS Green said: “From the way the car braked, it is obvious that they have seen something but they may not realise the significance of what they saw.

"At the time, it may have looked like a scuffle but we now know this was the moment Michael was stabbed.”

Mr Lawson’s family said they “cannot put into words the pain we are feeling from this needless, tragic loss.”

“Michael was an inspiration to us all, so full of life while caring for others.

“He was a son, grandson and dad who touched the hearts of all who knew him.”

Police have stressed the death is unconnected to any ongoing dispute in the town.

Anyone with information should contact the Durham Constabulary on 101.
