THE Sex Pistols’ song Liar was written about the then Prime Minister, Labour’s Harold Wilson, and my opinion on the majority of politicians is summed up in that song.

However, there was one MP who I actually liked and had respect for, namely Derek Foster, now Lord Foster of Bishop Auckland.

He often visited our estate of Woodhouse Close and I can remember him visiting my mam’s house. He also worked tirelessly to try and keep my old workplace, Shildon shops, the railway works, open.

So I was pleased to see him celebrating his 80th birthday and being rightly praised for his excellent work over many years (Echo, June 26).
