A MAN injured in a suspected stabbing in a market town this morning did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Several people have been arrested following the assault in Horsemarket, Barnard Castle, shortly after 4am this morning.

The victim has been identified locally as an employee of a town centre pub, where staff this morning confirmed he was not seriously injured.

The main road through the town - the A67 - was closed between MacFarlane's Family Butchers and the pedestrian crossing all morning to allow forensic investigators to examine the crime scene.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police responded to a disturbance involving a large number of people at Horsemarket, Barnard Castle shortly after 4am on Sunday, June 25. 

"Upon the arrival officers discovered a male who had a serious injury, this is not life threatening and the victim has been treated and released from hospital. 

"A number of people were arrested at the scene and they are currently being held in police custody."
