DELAYS are expected on a busy Darlington road this weekend.

A small hole has been found under the road in Haughton Green close to Haughton Working Mens Club.

The affected area has been cordoned off and temporary traffic lights are in place.

It is likely that the issue will affect the road over the weekend and potentially into the early part of next week.

A spokesperson for Darlington Borough Council said: “The hole is close to Northumbrian Water equipment, and the council and Northumbrian Water have been working together to identify the source of the problem.

“Technicians from the water company have confirmed there is a break in the sewer pipe.

“Arrangements have been made to excavate and repair the pipe and this will begin today.

“Technicians cannot guarantee how long this work will take but hope to have the repair completed fairly quickly and be finished by early next week.

“Residents are advised to avoid the area if possible, and we are working to minimise any inconvenience.”

Northumbrian Water said there will be no restriction in service to customers as flows within the pipe are not restricted and will be managed properly during the repair work.
