A MAN was arrested on Friday after making threats from a top floor window of a terraced house in Darlington.

Several police units were called to Thirlmere Road following reports of a man “screaming and shouting” from the top floor of a property.

An eyewitness said the man forced a window off the hinges and appeared to be holding a bottle of bleach in his hand and it is understood may have been making threats to drink it.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident.

Police confirmed the man has been "released under investigation" and further enquiries are on-going.

The nearby resident said she arrived home from work at around 8pm last night to find the street - off Neasham Road - cordoned off.

“There was a black car smashed up with the mirrors hanging off and glass all over the floor.

“He was screaming and shouting from the top window occasionally coming to the downstairs and holding signs up to the police and making miming actions.

“There were negotiators on scene and police with riot shields, and about six police cars.

“It was still going on around 11pm last night when I walked back home.”

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “There was an incident last night and a man is currently in custody helping us with our enquiries.

“There was a large police presence but no members of the public and no police officers were injured.”
