GLASSBLOWERS are needed to help with a new exhibition to celebrate the arrival of the Tall Ships in the region.

Dr Ayako Tani, an artist in residence at National Glass Centre in Sunderland, is putting out a call to Wearside-based scientific glassblowers from the 1970s and 80s to help with her project into the glass industry in the city.

Dr Tani, who has a PhD in the art of glass, is carrying out research to help put on an exhibition of glass ships in bottle, which will coincide with the arrival of the Tall Ships to Sunderland next year.

She said: “The production of glass ships in bottles was strongly related to the tradition of scientific glassblowing. I think it is vitally important to capture the recollections and experience of the skilled people who produced such wonderful work in its different forms.”
