CHILDREN from five primary schools have taken part in an annual parish art competition.

Prizes were handed out to young artists from schools in the Belmont parish area at an event yesterday.

The competition had a nature theme and was organised by Belmont Parish Council’s planting scheme working party, which tries to improve the environment of the area.

The winners were chosen by staff at Belmont Library, where the prize giving was held.

Age category winners were Riley Mahan, 4, of St Hild’s CE School, Rachel Osbaldestin, 9, of Cheveley Park School, Jessica Naisbitt, 10, of Durham Gilesgate School and Jamie Waldron, 6, of St Thomas More School.

Councillor Barbara Howarth, who chairs the planting scheme group, said: “There’s always a high standard of talent and it’s quite difficult to judge.

“It’s always a happy event and the children’s enthusiasm is wonderful.”

Winners were all given vouchers and plants, which will be planted at each of their schools.

The 20 best paintings are displayed at Belmont Library.
