RUNNERS have jogged, slid and crawled through a spectacular blaze of colour in bright sunshine as they paid tribute to departed loved ones.

More than 1,000 people took part in the now annual Colourama run, staged on the St Leonard’s RC School field and surrounding parkland, at Aykley Heads, Durham.

The fun colour run-style event is the now favoured mid-summer fundraiser, held in aid of St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham.

Many participants were remembering loved ones who were cared for at the hospice, at Merryoaks.

Among them was Rebecca Russell, who took part in memory of husband, Stephen.

Mr Russell, who died at the hospice, in March, was father to Lewis, 20, Tyler, 14, and 11-year-old Chloe.

The youngest two of those ran alongside their mother round the five kilometre course, on Saturday.

Mrs Russell, from Witton Gilbert, near Durham, said: “We want to thank St Cuthbert’s for allowing us the time to make memories before Steve passed away.”

She said the hospice almost became a home from home for the family.

“His final days were so peaceful. He passed away listening to his favourite music with myself and my sister Rita by his side.”

Mrs Russell added that the family wants to raise as much money as possible to help allow other families, “the same incredible support as we’ve had.”

Hospice development manager Laura Barker, said: “It’s been such a glorious day for us for Colourama.

“It’s such a bright and fun event so the sunshine has just added to the amazing atmosphere we have.

“We’re so thankful to each and every one who took part.”

As the final figure from the event is tallied, it is hoped it passes its £25,000 target.
