OUR story about campaigners losing their battle to stop a local pub from being converted into a shop has got a lot of reaction online.

More than 200 residents in Bishop Auckland, supported by the town’s MP, tried to protect The Aclet – describing it as a hub for the neighbourhood.

But they were devastated when a judge ruled on Thursday that the landmark premises, on the edge of the Woodhouse Close estate, can be sold to a property developer and converted into a Spar convenience store.

Here is what people have had to say:

Alyson Hope: Reminds me of my childhood, grew up on that street. Shame to see it turned into a Spar!! My friend lived there, her name was Trudy.

Caroline Pallister: Is the pub not closing because there arent enough customers like many other pubs now?

Lyndsey Taylor: Not sure why they need a spar when there's the late shopper round the corner and all the supermarkets at the end of the road

Mandy Ross: As if Bishop Auckland needs another supermarket; Aldi, Iceland, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, M&S, Lidl

Stephen Winter: Maybe the "campaigners" should have spent more money in the pub..

Kirsty Murray: Don't understand why they need another grocery store when there's an Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's m&s amongst others!! Most of which are walking distance from the aclet anyway!

Nic Burne-Cronshaw: We bought and shut a pub around corner from this. We've had four people ask why. Two wanted a kids party, one wanted a cheap Sunday dinner, one wanted to play dominoes. The profit margin is so low these places need to be packed to survive.

Jason Lee: Often go past this pub. Such a shame.
