THE next generation of elite rugby players from the North-East have had their first taste of being a part of England Rugby by visiting the home of the top flight team.

Young athletes from Darlington Mowden Park Rugby Football Club were invited to tour the 82,000-seater Twickenham Stadium, in London, and to learn tips and techniques from an England pro.

Full-back Alex Goode joined the youngsters for their Twickenham trip after they boarded the England team bus and were driven to the ground’s Lion Gate.

From there, the Mowden Park RFU players ran out of the Twickenham tunnel and onto the pitch as they were applauded by their families who were invited along to the Old Mutual Wealth Kids First day.

The initiative is designed to ensure Under 7 and Under 13 boys and girls across the country stay in the game and continue their training into adulthood.

England’s Mr Goode said: “I still remember the first time I ran out onto the Twickenham pitch and I’m sure that all of the children taking part today will never forget this incredible experience.

“It was great fun to be part of their day and pass on my tips to the next generation of English rugby player.”

Michelle Andrews, marketing director for Old Mutual Wealth, added: “The Old Mutual Wealth Kids First initiative is making a huge difference to children’s enjoyment of rugby.

“Seeing the smiles on the faces of the children as they trained at Twickenham confirms that. Our hope is that the experience will also encouraging them to stay in the game beyond their childhood.”
