NATURE lovers will be looking to earn a seal of approval as part of a wildlife survey to spot seals swimming in 2,000 miles of the region’s waterways.

The Canal and River Trust, the charity responsible for managing the River Tees and Tees Barrage, has issued an appeal for volunteers to join their conservation effort to keep an eye out for flippers and whiskers.

During one hour surveys at high tide, seal spotters will record the numbers of seals and their feeding behaviour by watching the animals from dry land with binoculars if necessary.

The survey, part-organised by the Industries Nature Conservation Association, is hoped to supply meaningful findings for studies of seal habits in the Tees Barrage area of Stockton.

Zoe Fraser, coordinating the seal survey on behalf of the Canal and River Trust, said: “No experience, special skills or prior knowledge are required to apply for this volunteering role, just plenty of enthusiasm, commitment and of course a keen eye.

“To get the most from this experience and to help achieve consistent data, we’re looking for volunteers who can offer at least ten hours to help with the surveys and be available at a variety of times – early morning, middle of the day and evening.”

“This year we are adding other elements to the survey to support our seal ID program and research.

“These changes include determining gender, recording the length of time at the surface of the water and mapping where seals are surfacing.”

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer seal spotter will receive training with the first training session being held on Wednesday, June 7, at 2.30pm, at the Tees Barrage.
