RESURFACING work is set to close one of the shortest streets in a city for two months this summer.

Durham County Council is carrying out the work on Owengate, Durham, between July 24 and September 22.

Despite being less than 100 metres long, the historic nature of the road, which connects Palace Green to the Bailey, means work to improve disabled access will take two months.

Brian Buckley, the council’s strategic highways manager, said: “As part of our ongoing road improvements, we are undertaking a number of projects in Durham City, including widening the footpath to allow for better disability access to Palace Green.

Due to the historic nature of the road, the necessary work is complex and we want to ensure that the results befit their surroundings.

“While the work is ongoing, a pedestrian diversion for Palace Green will be signed via Dun Cow Lane.

“The Cathedral Bus will temporarily make additional stops at the bottom of Dun Cow Lane and continue down North Bailey under the arches, stopping at the rear of the cathedral.

“We appreciate this work may result in some disruption, and we thank residents and businesses in advance for their patience and understanding.”

The road will be closed between 8.30am and 4.30pm each day.
