AFTER 16 years maintaining a colourful floral island at the centre of a Wensleydale village its custodian has now enlisted some help.

To celebrate the millennium, Bainbridge Parish Council converted an overgrown area in the centre of the village into a cobbled island interspersed by a floral display of decorative plants.

Since then Yvonne Peacock, who is the local district and parish councillor, has single-handedly maintained the area which is flourishing, flowering and weed-free.

However Cllr Peacock in addition to her civic duties is also involved in several businesses and doesn’t have much spare time, so she has enlisted the help of a team of younger village residents ? her four grandchildren.

The willing volunteers from her family - James 11, Ellie 10, Ronan, seven and Declan, five. are all keen gardeners and are happy to keep the floral island shipshape.
