PRIMARY school pupils were given an unusual surprise recently when a helicopter landed in their playing field.
The youngsters from Cockton Hill Junior and Infants School, in Bishop Auckland, were allowed to explore the Wild Cat Aircraft thanks to a visit from members of the Royal Navy.
Chief engineer Ashley Hinds, of 825 Naval Air Squadron, has two children at the school and was only too happy to organise the treat ahead of the half term break.
After landing in the school field, together with his colleagues he let the children have a closer look and answered their questions.
They then watched and waved as the helicopter flew over Bishop Auckland.
Headteacher Emily Stevens said: This has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for our pupils and they have really enjoyed the visit.”
