ANYONE walking past Tow Law Community Centre on a Thursday morning in recent weeks may have noticed a tempting smell of homemade treats drifting out of the door.

The reason for the appealing aroma was a free baking course that has encouraged people of all ages and abilities to cook up a storm this spring.

Funded by One Point, it was one of a series of short courses staged at the venue on Thursday mornings during term time, with a free crèche allowing parents and carers to learn new skills, knowing their little ones are safe and happy.

However, attendees take away more than just new skills and tasty treats. For many, the weekly get together has transformed their lives by boosting their confidence and widening their social circle.

Mother-of-three Ashleigh Reid, 37, suffered from post-natal depression after the birth of her youngest son. She credits the service and Tow Law Community Centre with helping her through this difficult time.

“I knew I needed help but I didn’t know what to do,” she said.

“I am from Northumberland originally and when I moved here I felt lost. Someone recommended calling One Point and they told me about the activities at the community centre. It’s been fantastic.

“I’ve met some wonderful people and made great friends. Getting to spend time doing something just for me with the knowledge that Leo is being looked after in the other room has made such a difference.”

Emma Thompson, 27, is equally passionate about the service.

“When we moved here from the Midlands we hardly knew anyone ,” she said.

“It was often just me and my little boy in the house during the day and I felt isolated, especially when he was younger. I really look forward to coming here each week.”

Other courses have included silk painting, wreath making, first aid, Christmas crafts and cooking around the world.

There are also sessions covering issues such as health and parenting.

The courses and all materials and ingredients are free, and attendees can take home their creations, along recipes and instructions to try out the activities with their friends and families.
