THE saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words, and the image of heavily armed Durham Police officer PC Nick Downing blowing a kiss to two women offering free hugs on the streets of Manchester certainly tells its own story.

The photograph was taken the day after the terror attack at Manchester Arena, and has since been shared online around the world as a symbol of love and hope in the midst of such an appalling atrocity.

PC Downing shook many hands, was photographed more times than on his own wedding day, and says he has never experienced such an outpouring of appreciation by the public as he did on the streets of Manchester during his shift on Tuesday.

And as the country moves into a Bank Holiday weekend, after what has been a traumatic time for so many, it is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and remember all those killed, injured and caught up in the bombing, as well as the incredible response by the emergency services, and the ongoing efforts of the police and security officials to bring those involved to justice.

However the long weekend also offers the chance to do what we do best – carry on in the face of adversity, and following PC Downing’s example, to carry on mindful that the simplest gesture of kindness can have a hugely positive impact.

So whatever you’re planning over the next few days, whether it’s a visit to one of the many brilliant events taking place around the region, a stroll along one of our spectacular beaches, or just trying to avoid the inevitable Bank Holiday downpours, we hope everyone has a happy – and safe – weekend.
