ATHLETES lifted hundreds of kilogrammes as they battled it out to qualify for a national strong man competition.

Ten men put their skills to the test in front of about 200 spectators at JP Fitness, in Spennymoor, on Saturday at the North of England’s Strongest Man show.

Competitors were challenged to lift a 135kg log over their head, deadlift 300kg, lift a car and frame weighing 250kg during a squat, walk 30 metres with 140kg of wood in each hand, lift an oversized dumbbell weighing 80kg and lift a 160kg stone over a height as many times as possible.

Mark Lawson, of North East Strongman Promotions, which hosted the event, said: “This is quite a competitive level, we had lots of people their watching and noone got hurt so it was a success.”

Three of the sportsman qualified for places at England’s Strongest Man to be held in June in London. They were Phil Roberts, of Sheffield, Mark Snade, of Bolton and Sean Logan, of Burnley.

If successful, they could earn a place in the UK’s Strongest Man competition in Belfast to be televised around Christmas.
