A FOOTBALL legend has shown his support for a charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged young people gain valuable new skills.

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery was full of praise for Cornerstone when he officially opened the homelessness charity’s new workshop in Willington yesterday.

As well as helping young people find accommodation, the charity teaches woodwork skills to 12 to 16-year-olds who are struggling in mainstream education. This not only boosts their employability and self-confidence but helps prevent them from turning to a life of crime.

From humble origins in a shed at the back of Cornerstone’s first office in Willington High Street, the operation has grown from strength-to-strength, with more than 70 young people now benefitting from the service every year.

The new workshop, located in Low Willington Industrial Estate, is fully equipped and has experienced tutors on hand to share their knowledge and expertise.

Mr Montgomery became aware of the charity’s work when he met Weardale county councillor Anita Savory, a Cornerstone trustee, at his grandchildren’s school in Wolsingham.

“Anita told me about their work and asked if I would open the new building,” said Mr Montgomery.

“I did a bit of research about what they do with young people who don’t go to school and I was very impressed. They help get youngsters off the street and into employment. I’ve spoken to one young man today who has spent time in prison but now, thanks to Cornerstone, he has a full-time job.”

Many other dignitaries, including councillors and County Durham police, crime and victims’ commissioner Ron Hogg, joined charity staff, volunteers and service-users for the launch party.

Willington and Hunwick county councillor Fraser Tinsley said: “Cornerstone provides a much-needed service and do a fantastic job. They help young people get back on the straight and narrow, which is good for them and for the community as a whole.”.

Cornerstone founder Steve Vasey said: “It’s overwhelming to think how far we have come and to see all these dignitaries here today. When I set this up all those years ago I never imagined how big it would become.”
