FANS of Darlington FC have urged the club to reveal more information about the reasoning for potentially allowing the return of a controversial chairman.

The Northern Echo revealed yesterday that Mr Singh, the man at the helm when Darlington FC crumbled in 2012, is hoping to return to the club.

The Teesside businessman is in talks with Quakers and has already agreed to put £40,000 into the club.

Darlington FC fan and columnist Trevor Oakley said he can’t help but feel “continued resentment” for Mr Singh, but admitted he wanted to hear “his side of the story”.

“Less than three weeks ago, I was enthused when Martin Gray spoke of outside investment coming in to the club,” he said.

“Since then, my enthusiasm has steadily waned with the speculation of Raj Singh’s involvement.”

Supporters will be asked for their approval on the return of what remains a controversial figure due to his role in Darlington’s demise five years ago - a time when the club went into administration and had to effectively start again in the Northern League.

“Whilst the idea of someone coming in and taking on some of the heavy lifting that the fans have shouldered in the last five years appealed to me, I can’t help but feel continued resentment for the man who made us shoulder that burden in the first place,” added Mr Oakley.

Another fan, Sean, said: “In his favour, he did put money into the club for no return, but against him is the fact that he just dumped the club, left the players with no wages for two months and stayed silent.

“He needs to tell the fans his aims and objectives before we can pass judgement,” he added.

Mr Oakley added: “I am going to hear Mr Singh out - however, when I see he is proposing an initial £40,000 investment with further plans to be outlined at a later date, for me, it doesn’t feel like it’s enough to allow him to get a foot through the door.

“The blood, the sweat and, more than anything else, the tears are worth far more than £40,000. “
