ADVENTUROUS youngsters have launched a crowdfunding campaign as they prepare to set sail on a life-changing voyage across the English Channel.

Eleven pupils from Wolsingham School in Weardale, County Durham, hope to sail a tall ship from Boulogne in France to Folkestone in Kent but they need the public’s help to get them to the starting line.

The school selected children who they believe are especially deserving of the experience, including those who have endured difficult personal circumstances such as illness and bereavement.

During the voyage, with the Cirdan Sailing Trust in July, the young crew will be pushed to the limit, playing an active role in sailing and maintaining the ship, preparing meals and carrying out night watches. They will need to work together as a team to problem solve and overcome potentially difficult situations.

It is hoped the experience will boost the children’s confidence and encourage higher aspirations

However, for the trip to go ahead the school needs to raise £1,500 to cover transport costs to France and other expenses.

Nic Cooper is one crew member who is no stranger to fundraising campaigns. The 15-year-old began raising funds for teenage cancer charities when he was recovering for a brain tumour.

“I’m really looking forward to the trip,” he said.

“I’ve tried sailing once or twice before while on holiday with my family but nothing like this. I’m happy as I’m going with my friends.”

Harley Gooding, 14, said she hoped the adventure would create lifelong memories, adding: “If the only thing you do at school is sit in a classroom and prepare for exams you won’t have anything exciting to look back on. The sailing trip will have a real impact on my life.”

Christina Fawcett, one of three Wolsingham School teachers taking part in the challenge, said: “At school there is always a focus on academic success. This is very important but it is nice to offer different opportunities outside of the classroom.

“The sailing trip will help to increase self-esteem, build resilience and develop important life skills. It’s about providing a well-rounded experience of education.”

So far the students have raised £310. They hope to raise further funds through a sponsored swim, with staff and pupils planning to swim a total of 30 miles, the same distance of the Channel crossing. To sponsor the crew, visit crowdfunder.co.uk/sailing-challenge
