SCHOOLCHILDREN met England manager Gareth Southgate at a ceremony to recognise their work in an anti-racism competition.

Year One pupils from South Stanley Infant and Nursery School were winners in the arts competition run by Show Racism The Red Card.

The children were presented with their award in an event at the King Power Stadium, home of Premier League champions Leicester City.

Teaching Assistants Kathryn Stobbs and Michelle Thompson worked with the children to create a spectacular art work made up of jigsaw pieces painted in different skin colours that fitted together to create a complete picture.

Not only did they win the Young People award, the school was also presented with the Graham Taylor OBE Memorial Award and will travel to watch the England team train ahead of a forthcoming World Cup qualifier.

Headteacher Heather Kemp said: “For the children’s hard work to be appreciated nationally is overwhelming. They have fully welcomed the message of respecting one another’s differences into their hearts”.

A celebratory assembly will be held at the school on Friday afternoon.
