POLICE cadets will lead out the teams when a top cycle race returns to the cobbled streets of Durham.

A group of 11 Durham Constabulary cadets, aged between 11 and 13, has been chosen to take on the role of team mascots when round nine of the Tour Series race comes to the city on Saturday, May 27.

The children will also take part in the trophy presentations after the race, which is expected to be watched by thousands of spectators.

Bryan Russell, executive manager of Durham Agency Against Crime which runs the police cadets, said: “We are proud and delighted to support the cycle ride in the city and are looking forward to contributing to the event.”

Durham School is also supporting the race by providing free use of the school buildings for the cyclists, their teams and the sponsors.

Headmaster Kieran McLaughlin, said: “We at Durham School are delighted to be involved once again in the cycle race.

“The sight of so many cyclists hurtling past our school is breath taking and we can only marvel at their endurance, particularly after the slog up South Street.

“It is a great event for the city and Durham School is proud to play its part.”

Steve Howell, head of culture and sport at the council, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming top cyclists back to Durham and are pleased the cadets are taking part in this popular event.

“The steep climbs will prove a challenge for the riders but they will be cheered on by plenty of spectators turning out to experience the great atmosphere.”
