UNSTINTING service given to a city cricket club by a real all-rounder is to be marked at a tribute event later this month.

Durham City CC stalwart Ray Pallister is to be honoured with the naming of the pavilion at the club’s Green Lane ground.

Current and former players will gather at the clubhouse prior to a forthcoming Durham Cricket League division one fixture on Saturday, May 20 for the official naming ceremony.

As a joint tribute to mark the support of the former club president’s late wife, Laura, who died two years ago, the building will be known as, The Pallister Pavilion.

Club vice-president John Whitfield said all those involved with Durham appreciate the efforts of Mr Pallister and his late wife.

“He’s been a full member for 60 years and been a great supporter of the club and the wider cricketing community.

“Naming the pavilion like this is quite unique, I believe, in local cricket circles, but we fell it’s a fitting honour for all he has done for the club.

“We’re expecting about 50 former cricketers to join the current team at the event, which is why we’re staging it shortly before a home fixture.”

Durham Indoor Markets and club sponsor Atom Bank are supporting the event, and Colin Wilkes of the markets company has agreed to sponsor the restoration of the pavilion clock, which will be presented at a further home game, next month.

During six decades at the club Mr Pallister played for 50 years and was a committee member for 43, while also captaining the second team.
