A CITY centre road is to be closed to all traffic for two successive weekends.

Resurfacing work is to be carried out on Providence Row in Durham City, with highways managers from Durham County Council warning that drivers will face disruption while work takes place.

The road, which links Claypath with The Sands and Freeman’s Place, will be resurfaced in sections.

Work will takes place on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 and again on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21.

On each weekend, Providence Row will be closed from its junction with Freeman’s Place to its junction with Claypath between 7am on the Saturday and 7pm on the Sunday.

During the closures, diversion routes will be in place and signed appropriately.

Drivers who need access to and from The Sands, which is home to one of the city centre’s busiest car parks, will be asked to come off the westbound carriageway of the A690 and use Walkergate and Freeman’s Place.

Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in operation on Freeman’s Place over both weekends to maintain traffic flow.

Brian Buckley, Durham County Council’s strategic highways manager, said: “These schemes are part of our ongoing programme to maintain the road network across the county.

“We appreciate there will be some disruption to motorists but we have planned the projects to ensure this is kept to a minimum”.

He added: “I’d like to thank motorists in advance for their patience and understanding while these works are carried out.”
