A TOWN will turn out in force today (Saturday April 29) hoping the latest chapter in its football fairytale has a happy ending.

Spennymoor Town FC will give all it’s got to win a crunch home tie against Stourbridge and earn itself a place in the National League North.

The County Durham side finished second in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division and made it to the play off final with a win against Nantwich Town midweek.

A win this afternoon would mean a third promotion in four years, during which time they also lifted the FA Vase at Wembley and this year made it to the first round proper of the FA Cup.

With their appetites for success whetted, Moors fans are expected to fill The Brewery Field and create a party atmosphere that could help carry the players to triumph.

Jason Ainsley, Spennymoor Town manager, hopes the occasion will bring people together and boost trade for local shops and pubs.

He said: “It’s great for the town to have something like this to look forward to and bring everyone together. It’ll also be good for the area to get an influx to the local pubs and shops on the day from the travelling Stourbridge fans – we’re expecting around 600.

“The players have worked hard to reach this stage and have enjoyed good support all season, so we’re counting on it again.

“I say it regularly in my match notes, but it really lifts everyone on the pitch when they see a big crowd and hear the great atmosphere the people of Spennymoor generate.

“We have a huge opportunity to reach new heights this weekend, so I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

Club captain Chris Mason, part of the FA Vase winning squad, is aiming to recapture the thrill of that win with promotion today.

He said: “It was a top occasion when we returned from Wembley and paraded through the town after the Vase win – we all felt part of something and it clearly gave local people a lift that day.

“This could be something similar for us. It’s a big step up but we’re ready to make it and we’re just looking forward to getting out on the pitch now.

“It’s going to be a big crowd, which will help the lads on the pitch and hopefully spur us on to victory.”

Adam Brown, director of PR, media and community engagement, said with 1,000 home and 600 away fans expected there will be more people in the area than usual on a match day.

He asked supporters to car share and use public transport if possible due to limited parking, to be considerate of neighbours’ property and to arrive early for the 3pm kick-off.

Official clubhouse The Moors Tavern, 80m from the stadium, will welcome both home and away fans.
