A FAMILY are embarking on a 150-mile bike ride to raise funds for a teenager with muscular dystrophy.

Scott Meeking, 14, suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a fatal muscle wasting condition which eventually causes the heart and lungs to fail.

On Saturday, May 13, his family will be embarking on a bike ride from Seascale on the west coast of England to Whitby in North Yorkshire, with the aim of raising funds and support for the teenager.

Scott’s parents, Andy and Emma Meeking, from Embsay, just outside Skipton, will be staging the cycle ride with friends Alison Bell and husband and wife Stuart and Claire Willis, also from Embsay.

Mr Willis said: “Scott’s parents, Andy and Emma Meeking have, over the last eight months, been organising lots of fundraising events including raffles, a Christmas shopping event and sponsored challenges to name just three, in order to provide Scott with what he needs to make his short life more comfortable and enjoyable.

“The ultimate aim is to raise enough to provide Scott with an accessible downstairs bedroom and bathroom where he can be cared for by his family in the most dignified way possible and where he can have some independence as a young man.

“It would also provide a space where as many happy memories as possible could be created for Scott’s parents and his two younger brothers, so that they can always remember the funny, determined and brave boy that Scott is.”
