A NEW toddler group aimed at getting children outside is being launched this weekend.

The Durham City Woodchips group, aimed at children under the age of six, will have its first meeting on Saturday.

Mum Rachael Chapman set up the group after struggling to find anything similar to go to with her daughter.

She said: “There are a lot of toddler venues but they are all indoor based but there was nothing in this area that had an outdoors focus.

“There’s been a bit of a culture shift in terms of technology and kids aren’t getting out as much which was frustrating.

“I enjoy the outdoors and and I wanted the opportunity to encourage my children to enjoy the outdoors to.”

This Saturday, the group is planning to look for eggs in the woods before decorating them.

Other activities lined up include a trip to Blackhall Rocks, wand making and bark rubbing.

The group will meet on Saturdays, between 10.30am and noon, usually at the Waddington Street United Reformed Church before heading to Flass Vale.
