SEARCH and mountain rescue teams came to the aid of a group of army cadets on Easter Sunday after a 14-year-old fell ill in the Pennines.

Both the Teesdale and Weardale Mountain Rescue Team and the Kirby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team were called to find the group who were on a navigation exercise around the Warcop military training area when the teenager complained of abdominal pain.

Two senior cadets were sent to get assistance and the group was found by both teams by 9pm.

A spokesman for the Teesdale and Weardale Mountain Rescue team said the teenager was assessed by a team doctor but the pain had subsided and the decision was made to escort the group back to awaiting vehicles.

They were then driven to Birkdale farm near Cow Green reservoir before being taken back to their base.

He said: “The cadets were cold and wet, but very pleased to have been rescued from what was looking like a night camped high in the Pennines.”
