HUNDREDS of pounds and a carnival performance await the winners of a youth music award.

Young musicians have been invited to apply for the chance to win the Maddison Lyonette prize.

Now in its second year, the award was established to recognise two late Darlington councillors and their instrumental contribution to the town’s Community Carnival.

It is named after Jackie Maddison, who died in 2012 after more than 20 years as the carnival’s chair, and Joe Lyonette, the carnival’s music organiser who died in 2015.

The prize was created with the aim of supporting young musicians, with those behind it hoping it will play a part in ensuring the carnival continues to thrive.

Winners will take away £300 and the opportunity to play at the upcoming carnival, taking place on Saturday, June 24.

The closing date for prize applications is Saturday, April 22. For more information, email carnival@theforumonline.co.uk or call 01325 363135.
