A CANDIDATE hoping to become the first Mayor of the Tees Valley has pledged to oppose controversial plans to build hundreds of homes near a North-East airport.

John Tennant, UKIP’s Tees Valley Mayor candidate, says Durham Tees Valley Airport is in danger of becoming an “embarrassment”.

Last month, Darlington Borough Council’s planning applications committee to approve the build of 350 homes on the northern border of the airport, despite more than 400 objections.

The development site at Middleton St George will incorporate residential development and a community services centre to include retail and office space, a cafe, restaurant, pub, gym, car showroom, parking and community facilities.

Mr Tennant, who describes himself as “lead of the opposition” on Hartlepool council said: “Building homes on a green belt destroys the local economy.

“If the airport expands, these homes will eventually have to be pulled down.

“We have got to help Durham Tees Valley Airport, but buying it is not a long term solution.

“Yes we need the 350 homes, but not on that site.”

Mr Tennant was speaking at The Grand Hotel in Hartlepool as he launched his manifesto for the Tees Valley Mayor election.

He once again reaffirmed his pledge to hold a referendum on the post of a Tees Valley Mayor as soon as he is elected.

Mr Tennant has previously said he would be on the side of the "no" campaign, but would abstain from voting.

“If we have good transport infrastructure and good housing, the area will be an attractive place to visit, study, work and for businesses to invest in.

Mr Tennant was joined by Jonathan Arnott, UKIP’s North-East MEP, to launch his campaign.

“The nature of UKIP means we have always been turkeys voting for Christmas.

“This time we have John Tennant – a turkey voting for a referendum on Christmas.”

The other candidates standing for election are Ben Houchen for the Conservatives, Sue Jeffrey for Labour, and Chris Foote Wood of the Liberal Democrats.

The election takes place on May 4.
