A SCHOOL that was damaged by a fire yesterday will remain partly closed next week, it has been confirmed.

An electrical fire broke out at Pennyman Primary Academy in Middlesbrough on Thursday, destroying the caretaker’s cupboard and causing light smoke damage throughout the building.

No children or staff were hurt in the incident, but the school have confirmed sections of the building will remain closed until after the Easter holidays.

A statement on the school website explained the situation for pupils next week.

“Unfortunately, Nursery will be closed next week. It will re-open, following the Easter Holidays, on Monday, April 24.

“Children from Mainstream Reception to Year Five will be taught by their own teachers in local schools and educational provision.

“Children should arrive at the academy through their normal Key Stage gates at 8.50am and be collected at 3pm - staff will be there to meet the children at this time.

“There will be no access to the academy office, and transport arrangements have been made for children as necessary."

“Normal school dinner arrangements have been mad - those children who have school dinner will receive this next week, and those who bring packed lunches should continue to do so.

“Year Six pupils will be taught in the Pennyman Teaching School Building throughout next week, with dinner arrangements as above.”

Katrina Morley, executive head teacher, praised the fire brigade yesterday for “saving out school”

She said ‘significant tax payer’ money has been saved thanks to the fire brigade despite them facing cuts ‘left, right and centre’.

She also said she was ‘proud to be part of this community’ after local shops and schools helped out during the incident.
