A GRANDFATHER who has raised more than £5,000 for charity since he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease is hoping for a repeat of last year’s success with another fundraiser.

Bill Holdsworth was diagnosed with the life-changing disease five years ago after his GP referred him to a neurologist.

Since his diagnosis, Mr Holdsworth has organised three fundraisers at Mainsforth Community Centre, Ferryhill Station, raising thousands for Parkinson’s UK.

The father-of-three said: “My life has changed drastically since I got the diagnosis. Parkinson’s doesn’t take your life, but it takes the enjoyment out of your life.

“The tremors are the most obvious symptom, but it also affects my speech and mobility. I take medication daily now and will for the rest of my life.

“I have good days and bad, good days are ok, but bad days are hard, it’s everyday activities that you take for granted that become difficult.

“I have a four-week-old granddaughter that I haven’t been able to hold yet because of the tremors.”

Parkinson’s is an incurable progressive neurological condition that affects around 127,000 people in the UK.

Mr Holdsworth, of Ferryhill Station, added: “I decided to organise a fundraiser because it seemed as though there were always people raising money for cancer charities and nobody seemed to do anything for Parkinson’s.

“We’ve raised well over £5,000 so far for Parkinson’s UK, but the fundraisers aren’t just about raising money, but also awareness.”

Lauren Sproates, Mr Holdsworth’s daughter, added: “It was a shock when Dad got his diagnosis, but it was his positive mental attitude that made me think there’s no point in getting down about it.

“I’m really proud of him organising the fundraisers. Last year’s event was brilliant, we were packed, and everyone said they had a really good night.”

The fourth fundraising event is set to take place on Saturday, April 22, with comedian Rudi West and singer Jamie Tinkler at Mainsforth Community Centre.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets cost £6 and are available from Colin’s Fish Bar, Ferryhill Station, or by contacting 07814-965724.
