NEWCASTLE UNITED striker Dwight Gayle has been named on a three-man shortlist for the Championship Player of the Season award at the 2017 EFL Awards.
Gayle is up against Leeds United forward Chris Wood and Brighton midfielder Anthony Knockaert for the honour, which will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Sunday, April 9.
Gayle has spearheaded Newcastle’s promotion push this season, scoring 21 Championship goals despite his recent struggles with a hamstring injury.
Wood has scored 22 league goals for Leeds, while Knockaert is the Championship’s highest-scoring midfielder with 13 league goals.
There are 14 different awards, with players set to be recognised in all three divisions of the EFL as well as further categories for managers, supporters and community involvement.
Shaun Harvey, EFL chief executive, said: “It’s been an exciting and action-packed 12 months for the EFL both on and off the pitch. There have been some incredible individual and team performances across the three divisions, entertaining the millions of fans who follow the EFL week in, week out.
“Off the pitch our clubs continue to have a positive and lasting impact in their local communities, using the power of football to deliver life-changing programmes and activities.”
