ARMED police brought traffic to a standstill after stopping a 4x4 pulling a caravan on a busy North-East road.

The incident occurred on the A167, near Aycliffe Village, County Durham at around 7.30pm on Sunday.

The police helicopter was also in attendance.

A witness told The Northern Echo: "I have just driven past a car that has been stopped by five police cars. There's a helicopter overhead too."

Speaking on Monday morning, Durham Police said that, despite the number of officers called to the scene, no arrests were made.
