A PROPOSED new school could be set to relieve pressure on primary school places in Catterick Garrison.

Lingfield Education Trust has put forward an application to North Yorkshire County Council to open Cambrai Community Primary School, which, if successful, would open on the former Darlington College site, in Catterick Road, in September 2018.

The Darlington-based multi-academy trust is holding a series of consultation events around the proposals this week to give more information to the public about the plans for the school, which would include a nursery.

Nick Blackburn, chief executive of Lingfield Education Trust, said: “There are already a shortage of places available at primary schools in the area and reports suggest that the Ministry of Defence is proposing to build an additional 315 serviced family homes by 2019 on sites in the surrounding area, further accelerating demand.

“If our plans are successful, this won’t just be a school for military families but a school for all. Ensuring a quality experience for pupils in Catterick and the surrounding areas is paramount, and we have the expertise, passion and drive to deliver just that.”

North Yorkshire County Councillor for Catterick Garrison, Cllr Helen Grant, said: “The shortage of places experienced a year or so ago highlighted the needs of the area and these are now being addressed.

“I hope parents will take the opportunity to get involved in the consultation process.”

Cambrai Community Primary School would be the first in the North Yorkshire area for the trust, which currently operates five schools across Darlington.

The consultation events will take place at Colburn Parish Hall at 6.30pm on Wednesday, March 29 and Catterick Garrison Library at 7.15pm on Thursday, March 30.
