A BRIGHT yellow takeaway car which was thrown into the limelight over an online video has been vandalised.

The vehicle, complete with pizza wheels and a chilli on top, caused a stir earlier this week when footage was released of it chasing a man dressed as Spiderman to advertise Newton Aycliffe’s new Domino’s store.

Gusto Takeaway and Cafe, of the town, posted the clip on Facebook in what one of its partners called “light-hearted banter”.

However, the conspicuous vehicle, dubbed Mr Cheese, is said to have been the target of vandalism overnight on Tuesday.

Owners yesterday discovered one wing mirror was torn off and the other left hanging from the vehicle while the boot was dented.

The damage, which was caused while the car was parked in Bewick Crescent Car Park, was reported to police and recorded as a crime.

Officers will visit the takeaway later this week and are checking for any CCTV footage from the area.

The Mexican and pizza takeaway, which has its base on Gurney Way, is appealing for information about the damage.

Chris Bennett, a partner for Gusto, said the business had also been visited by police following complaints over the original video - which showed the vehicle driving along a path towards the dancing Spiderman.

Inspector Sarah Honeyman said: “We understand the rivalry between Gusto and Domino’s is basically good-natured, however driving on a footpath is an offence.

“We have spoken to the owners of Gusto and warned them that any repeat of this will lead to official police action.”
