A NEW exhibition at Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum will focus on almost 120 years of history on the former Harrogate to Northallerton line.

‘A Return to Ripon: Harrogate – Northallerton 1848-1967’ opened on the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Leeds Northern route to passengers.

The route ran between Harrogate, Ripon and Northallerton and just two years later in 1969, the remaining small amount of freight traffic between Starbeck, Melmerby and Ripon ceased. Its rails and infrastructure were then rapidly removed.

Alison Grange, Collections and Learning Assistant at the museum, said: “North Eastern Railway Association is a regular exhibitor at Head of Steam and its displays always prove popular with visitors. We’re delighted to host ‘A Return to Ripon’ on what is the 50th anniversary of the closure of a line that may well still be remembered by many of our visitors.”

The exhibition is on display until Wednesday, April 12 and entry is included in admission to the museum.
