AN ELDERLY lady who took to a busy road on her mobility scooter had to be escorted home by police this morning.
A concerned motorist flagged down passing police officers close to junction 59 of the A1(M) after becoming worried that the pensioner – who was seen travelling along the A167 – would drive the scooter onto the motorway.
The Durham Constabulary officers acted quickly to find the woman, who was using her scooter in a 50mph zone on the A167 at Coatham Mundeville, near Darlington.
A spokeswoman for the force said that the lady, who was in her 80s, was unharmed following the incident, which happened at around 11am.
She added: “There was a fear she may have tried to gain access to the motorway from the slip road.
“She was unharmed but appeared confused and could not explain how she had come to be on the A167.”
The woman was taken home by police and her son collected her scooter soon afterwards.
