LOVERS of crown green bowling in Darlington have received a boost of £64,500 to improve facilities across the town.

Darlington Parks Bowling Association, which took over the running of most of the borough’s bowling greens in 2010/11, secured the support of Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund to improve facilities at North Lodge Park and North Park.

Terry Beer, treasurer of Darlington Parks Bowling Association (DPBA), said: “This funding has made a huge difference, enabling us to carry out this much needed work to safeguard the greens for the future. Our whole aim is to make the sport more attractive and encourage people to give it a go. The improved facilities will hopefully help us do just that.”

Malcolm Cundick, chairman of DPBA, and secretary at North Lodge Park Bowls Club, added: “We also host taster days to give people the chance to give bowls a try, and we’re always keen o welcome new members, of all ages.”
