A PHOTOGRAPHER has been named as one of the best in the world for his work on “food puns”.

Grant Hegedus, from Billingham, has made the top ten shortlist in the Sony World Photography Awards.

The 21-year-old’s work involves transforming the names of popular foods into what they literally describe, and making them come alive as a physical form.

He has produced unique takes on a Beef Wellington, Egg and Soldiers and a Christmas favourite Pigs in Blankets.

Mr Hegedus attended Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Hartlepool and created Food Puns as part his final major project during his studies.

“I was over joyed with finding out that I had been shortlisted for such a prestigious award,” said Mr Hegedus.

“I can’t even say that it has sunk in because it hasn’t - each time I think about it I just seem to smile or feel overwhelmed with happiness.”

Over 227,000 images from 183 countries were submitted for the awards and the winners will be announced in a ceremony on April 20.

The photographer’s work will also be shown alongside the awards’ other shortlisted and winning images at an exhibition in London from April 21 to May 7.

Mr Hegedus added: “My parents and family are close to being as overwhelmed and as happy as me and my friends understand how big of a chance this is and are really pleased.”
