A DARLINGTON duo are looking to raise money for a cancer charity by taking part in a walk organised by the region’s favourite football presenter.

David Stott and his uncle Anthony Hall will be joining Jeff Stelling for the final two legs of his 15 marathon walks in 15 days.

Mr Stott, 47 is looking to raise money after his father Michael was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year, and he will join the Hartlepool-born presenter for the final 53 miles of his journey.

Mr Stelling, who is most known for presenting Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, is looking to raise £500,000 for Prostate Cancer UK by walking from Exeter City’s St James Park stadium to Newcastle United’s identically named ground.

Mr Stott and Mr Hall, 51, will leave Darlington FC on June 15 and walk to Middlesbrough FC and Hartlepool FC, covering approximately 27 miles.

The following day, they will travel a further 25 miles as they walk from Durham County Cricket Club to Newcastle United, visiting Sunderland AFC and Gateshead FC on the way.

Speaking about his father’s diagnosis, Mr Stott said: “It was hard – it came as quite a shock for us.

“People don’t realise how common prostate cancer is –a lot of people we have spoken too were surprised by the amount of people it affects.”

Last year, Mr Stelling walked ten marathons in ten days and raised more than £400,000 for people affected by prostate cancer.

“I saw Jeff do it last year and thought it would be a great event for us to take part in,” said Mr Stott.

“As you can imagine, the charity is very close to our hearts, and we really want to publicise and spread awareness of this great charity.

“We have got a target of £1,500, but we want to go above and beyond that.

“The more money we raise, the more we can help with research into tackling this type of cancer.”

Mr Stelling plans to visit 40 football clubs across the country during his epic challenge, which begins on June 2.

Speaking at the launch of the walk, Mr Stelling said: “Prostate Cancer kills one man ever hour in the UK, and I just decided I couldn’t sit on my backside and do nothing about it.”
