MEMBERS of a pool league are joining the fight to help save men’s lives by raising money for Prostate Cancer UK.

The Stokesley Pool League is hoping to raise over £1,000 by way of pool competitions, collection tins and the sale of Prostate Cancer UK pin badges at each of the league’s venues.

The league has been running for 33 years, it was started in 1983 and today represents over 140 pool players in the Stokesley and surrounding areas in both winter and summer leagues.

It recently changed to ‘blackball’ rules as sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiards Association (WPA). This resulted in Stokesley players representing both North Yorkshire and Teesside at County level for the first time and some reached the national finals in Selsey last year and are on track to do the same in 2017.

John Corner, Stokesley Pool League Chairman said: “I proposed supporting Prostate Cancer UK to the league because the league represents the perfect demographic that the charity is trying to target information to. The players are always generous when we run these events and the support was unanimous at the January meeting’

“I am really looking forward to running some pool competitions and I’m delighted to be raising awareness and much needed money to help beat prostate cancer.”

James Beeby, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see that the Stokesley Pool League has decided to organise these events to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate Cancer is something that cannot be ignored and by doing this they are joining the fight and helping to make a difference.

“Currently one man an hour dies from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s 10,900 men a year. Based on current trends, if we ignore prostate cancer and do nothing, this number will rise to over 14,500 men a year by 2026. And by 2030 it’s predicted to be the most common cancer overall“. Whatever you do together, big or small, you’ll be helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments.”
