FOOD lovers and families are in for a treat this spring as a County Durham town prepares for its celebration of consumables.

Bishop Auckland Food Festival returns on Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2, with the promise of the usual array of stalls, masterclasses, demonstrations and entertainment.

Now in its 14th year, the event sees food and drink producers from across the North of England flock to flog their wares.

This year sees the return of Tom and Henry Herbert, of The Hobbs House Bakery, best known as stars of Channel 4’s Fabulous Baker Brothers, who will take to the stage on the festival's first day.

On Sunday seasoned TV chef Richard Fox will be back to guide audiences through the culinary creation of his favourite dishes including sushi, tapas and gnocchi.

And the Urban Rajah’s Pop-up Café is also back with Ivor Peters, The Urban Rajah, working with students and staff from Bishop Auckland College to create the ultimate Indian dining experience.

Young foodies can try their hand at a range of culinary techniques at the Children’s Cookery School running in the Newgate Centre with classes ranging from bread to pizza making, scones to fizzy cocktail concoctions.

And providing a soundtrack to the weekend will be bands from Durham’s BRASS festival while comedy fans are being offered The Big Comedy Feast, a stand-up comedy night.
